History of Voice Over

History of Voice Over

Nate talks about the history of Voice-Over and how things have changed the way we communicate.

The history of voice over goes back to the early 1900s. After Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone on March 7, 1876, Guglielmo Guglielmo Marconi: an Italian inventor who successfully sent the first long-distance wireless telegraph. He sent his first wireless signal across the English channel in 1899, by means of electromagnetic waves. It was a simple signal at the time and it worked. He didn’t know that history was made that first year and would revolutionise voice over as we know it today.

Closely following in Marconi’s footsteps was another inventor Reginald Fessenden who wanted to a way to broadcast messages both near and far sent the first audio message on Christmas Eve, 1906. The wireless radio was the best was to send messages without using wires in the form of radio waves.

An old vintage retro radio.

Many families would sit around the radio to listen to music, radio plays and hear all about the world from the comfort of their homes

So what does radio have to do with voice over?

With radio, came the need for voice-over narrators. Well-spoken men and women who could talk over the radio to tell a message without making mistakes or miss pronunciations. Someone who could read well from a script was highly sought after in the early days of radio as nothing was recorded back then and it all had to be done live. Everytime a message was heard on the radio these male or female voiceover narrators would define the future of voice acting.
You’ve no doubt listened to the radio today and heard a variety of commercials that have been read by many voice actors. Some may be Movie actors, other may be TV actors, and many voices you hear you can’t recognise who they are but they all tell the message in a professional way. Voice actors are highly sought after even today that have their own high end equipment.

Early Microphones

Microphones have evolved and improved since these early styles of devices.

No matter how sophisticated the recording device is, soundproofing is equally essential. There’s nothing worse than hearing room noise in a recording, a plane flying by or a dog barking from a block away. Soundproofing is the quintessential part of a good recording versus a poor quality recording.
